Well worth it: Outbound Asian high-net-worth capital is increasingly targeting direct real estate

by Dr Megan Walters and David Huang

Asia Pacific is a net exporter of capital to real estate markets in Europe and North America. JLL estimates that private wealth now makes up one-third of all Asian outbound investments in direct real estate. With flows of cross-regional capital accelerating, Asian high-net-worth capital is rising fast and competes on the global stage for prime real estate assets. JLL conducted an in-depth study on this capital source utilising data from Wealth-X, which tracks about 200,000 HNW individuals globally with at least US$30 million in wealth. Amongst the findings, we identified the propensity for individuals to hold their wealth invested in real estate varies widely between regions; however, for those that made their money in real estate, the percentage holding real estate investments is much more uniform across regions.
