The four food groups: A closer look at the four main institutional property types

No matter where you go these days, nutrition importance is all around. From social media to children’s programming to the White House, eating right remains a hot topic. Many of us remember learning about the four basic food groups: vegetables and fruits, dairy, proteins and cereals/breads.

Real estate has four basic “food groups” as well: office, multifamily, retail and industrial. These four sectors make up a majority of real estate investing today.

According to USAA Real Estate Co.’s U.S. Property Market Outlook 2016: House View report, the U.S. economy and real estate markets delivered another solid performance in 2015. Annual GDP growth was on pace to finish above 2 percent for the second consecutive year.
