Liquidity vs marketability: The truth about liquidity, marketability and the real asset classes

In the securities world, terms like “liquidity” and “marketability” are often used interchangeably, but they are fundamentally different. Liquidity means you can convert an asset into cash at or near its fair value. Marketability simply means there is a market where the asset can be sold — eventually — at some price that may or may not be close to fair market value and often at deep discounts, particularly when the markets are approaching or at bottom.

2026 capital markets: A global reset is reshaping foundations that have long guided investment decisions

History will remember 2025 as the year an old order ended and a new one began. Many of the foundational principles of economics, politics and commerce that have shaped modern investing have been ripped up or rewritten. The postwar liberal world order — characterized by multilateral trade, international rule of law and global stability — has officially given way to a more unpredictable, multipolar reality. Within the United States, long-standing structural mainstays like central bank independence and an expanding labor force are no longer a given. Even the value of a college degree is being questioned as artificial intelligence upends entire industries and occupations. If today’s rapid pace of change seems dizzying, grab a seat and hold on: It only accelerates from here.

Future standards: Institutional investors can define the systems that will shape the next era of investing

Institutional investors must treat technology not as an optional upgrade, but as critical investment infrastructure that enables better decisions and stronger performance. A thoughtful review of in-house technology solutions delivers clear benefits. Technology creates a common source of knowledge across the organization, ensuring teams are not working from conflicting datasets or outdated information. That consistency supports accuracy, particularly when data feeds into multiple workflows such as manager evaluation, due diligence and portfolio reporting. The right systems also improve timeliness. Faster access to information allows teams to respond to opportunities or risks while it still matters. Finally, digital workflows enable scale. Institutions can manage larger, more diverse portfolios with similar staffing levels while maintaining strong governance and attention to detail. These are not perks. They are central to fulfilling fiduciary responsibility.

HQ workplace design: Locations are chosen based on strategic impact, not square footage

Companies now pick headquarters (HQs) based on strategic impact rather than square footage and prestige. They ask whether the space will help attract talent, support operations and foster collaboration. Location counts for convenience and proximity to clients, but it is secondary to the value a space brings to business goals. In short, decision makers view HQs as more than a physical asset —they should enhance strategy.
