The U.S. retail market is on pace to add an estimated net 26.1 million square feet of space based on year-to-date store opening and closure announcements through July 31, 2026, according to Coresight Research.
Retailers have announced 3,255 store openings totaling approximately 63 million square feet, compared with 3,399 announced closures totaling 36.9 million square feet.
Large-format and grocery retailers are among the biggest contributors to new space. IKEA has announced a net increase of 11 stores year to date, representing an estimated 1.2 million square feet of net retail space, the largest square-footage increase among retailers tracked.
