U.S. multifamily transactions hit record $184b in 2019

U.S. multifamily acquisitions hit their highest volume last year since 2005, jumping up to $184 billion, according to new research by CBRE.

According to the report, overall investments were driven by single-asset purchases, which reached $145 billion, a 10.3 percent increase from 2018.


Of the multifamily sectors, garden assets saw the highest deal volume with investments totaling $118 billion, accounting for 64 percent of total multifamily investments. However, the mid/high-rise segment saw a year-over-year decrease of 0.9 percent to $65.3 billion, weakened by rent regulations and poor rent growth.
