Retail sales: France catches up with Germany

French economic growth is robust and retail sales are on the rise in 2018. With about €530 billion ($614 billion) of retail sales forecast for the year, France is catching up with Germany (€540 billion/$625 billion), and is still ahead of the United Kingdom (€460 billion/$533 billion), according to BNP Paribas Real Estate.

With €81.7 billion ($94.6 billion) in 2017, e-commerce continues to grow very considerably in France. Sales increased by 14 percent in 2017. The number of transactions has climbed by 20.5 percent.

Although there has been a decline in the average basket, to €65.5 ($75.9), this erosion has been easily compensated by the greater frequency of purchases. The average annual basket per shopper increased in 2017 to about €2,200 ($2,548), i.e. an increase of about 190 percent in 10 years. The French e-commerce activity should continue to grow in 2018 and break through the symbolic €100 billion ($117 billion) threshold in 2020. Consumers are in
