Shopping-center foot traffic for 2021 rose 32.2 percent from 2020, but still remains somewhat short of 2019 levels, according to JLL.
Suburban shopping centers have seen faster recovery than urban retail; in fact, suburban retail traffic has nearly returned to 2019 levels, the firm reported. And the number of retailers filing for bankruptcy is the lowest it has been in five years. After 70 major retailers declared bankruptcy in 2020, the number of filings fell 77 percent to 16 bankruptcies in 2021.
