REITs return 4% in first quarter

U.S. equity REITs recorded a total return in first quarter 2015 four times higher than the S&P 500 Index, with the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index advancing 4.0 percent in the first three months of the year.

U.S. REITs’ dividend yields also overtook the dividend yield of the S&P 500. The dividend yield of the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index was 3.8 percent as of March 31. The dividend yield of the S&P 500 was 2.02 percent at the end of the quarter.

“REITs have a well-established track record of delivering competitive total return performance to their shareholders,” said NAREIT president and CEO Steven Wechsler in a statement. “Their strong dividends are an important component of their total return performance.”

In 2014, REITs paid out $46 billion in dividends to their shareholders, up 35 percent from 2013.
