by Loretta Clodfelter

U.S. REITs declined in April, amid market sentiment that interest rates would remain higher for longer. The FTSE Nareit Equity REITs Index fell 7.0 percent in April following two months of rising total returns. REITs returned 2.1 percent and 2.0 percent in March and February, respectively. Year-to-date, the index is down 7.2 percent.

Falling REIT prices came amid a broader equities retrenchment, as the S&P 500 Index fell 4.1 percent during April, while the Nasdaq Composite Index rose and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 4.4 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively, during the month.
