Record-breaking number of skyscrapers completed in London

by Andrea Waitrovich

More skyscrapers were constructed in London in 2016 than ever before, with 26 opening their doors and 455 more in the pipeline, according to the fourth annual London Tall Buildings Survey.

The report shows figures on the number of towers of 20 stories or more completed, proposed or currently in planning across the capital's 33 boroughs in 2016.

The 2016 total was more than double the number recorded in 2015's survey. Work also began on 48 tall buildings, an increase of 68 percent on the 29 that began in 2015. And the report shows there are 455 skyscrapers currently in the pipeline across the city, up marginally from the 436 reported in 2015 survey.

Construction is now under way on 91 of these, while 256 have been granted planning permission, 63 submitted for consideration and 45 are at the pre-application stage.
