The latest data shows there are now 4,831 self-storage facilities across Europe, providing nearly 10.5 million square meters (113 million square feet) of self-storage space, according to JLL’s ninth European Self Storage Annual Survey in conjunction with the Federation of European Self Storage Associations (FEDESSA).
The six biggest self-storage markets in Europe — the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Norway — have 78 percent of the market share of facilities and 84 percent of the total available floor space.
Among the key findings from the report, the average occupancy across Europe stayed broadly level with last year at 79 percent. Between February and June, most countries saw an increase in occupancy levels, and the average occupancy at the end of June had increased to 80 percent. An improvement in occupancy rates during the pandemic is evidence of the defensive nature of self-storage.
