European investment volumes post new record, Asia Pacific shows strong finish in 2021

by Andrea Zander

European investment volumes posted a new record in 2021, reaching €126 billion ($144 billion) in fourth quarter 2021, up 37 percent on fourth quarter 2020, and exceeding the €123 billion ($140 billion) in fourth quarter 2019, according to CBRE Research. The full-year 2021 investment volumes in Europe totaled €359 billion ($410 billion), a 25 percent increase from 2020, posting a new annual record, despite first quarter 2020 being the strongest first quarter on record. Germany, Sweden and Norway also posted record numbers in 2021.

CBRE also reported Asia Pacific showed an increase in transactions. Asia Pacific investment turnover rose by 5.7 percent year-over-year to $41 billion in fourth quarter 2021, pushing up full-year turnover to $141 billion, slightly below 2017’s high of $142 billion. Cross-border investment returned to pre-pandemic levels, supported by Asia Pacific investors’ strong appetite for overseas assets.
