Progress on the decarbonization of European real estate is being hindered by a lack of understanding and collaboration between property owners and occupiers.
In a report called Occupiers and Owners: Faster and Further on the Pathway to Decarbonization Together, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) said that many current working practices and structures need to be reviewed in order for tenants and landlords to reach their net-zero targets.
The report — compiled by ULI’s C Change program, which aims to mobilize the European real estate industry to decarbonize — said there are often “missed connections” between owners and occupiers over carbon emission reduction. These “missed connections” include a lack of understanding of broader decarbonization goals and an absence of common language.
