2014 proved to be stellar year for REITs

The FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs index capped off a stellar 2014 with a December that saw a 1.26 percent return, bringing the index’s 2014 total return to 28.03 percent, a nearly tenfold increase over the index’s 2.86 percent 2013 return. Despite some tough months in the middle of the year, the index still vastly outperformed the 2014 results of the S&P 500 Index (11.81 percent) and the Alerian MLP Index (4.8 percent).

Among REIT property types, there were no big losers or winners in December except for infrastructure REITs, which lost 4.99 percent, yet they still reached the end of 2014 with a 20.15 percent positive return for the year.
