Renters want more space, greater safety

Renters’ preferences are evolving, and include walkability and home office space, according to a national survey conducted by RCLCO. The 2023 National Renter Consumer Preferences Report found an unmet demand for single-family rentals, and desires for more space and greater security.

Home office space was the most popular use of any additional space, across all household types, found RCLCO. The rise of part- or full-time work-from-home has meant a significantly greater need for home office space. Walkability was also universally popular, with working households prioritizing shorter commutes, while retirees prioritize nearness to family.

Only 40 percent of survey respondents currently live in a low-density rental home, but 72 percent said their ideal rental unit type is either a single-family home (51 percent of respondents) or townhouse/duplex (21 percent of respondents).
