by Jody Barhanovich

The $75.1 billion State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio’s total fund return for the fiscal year ended June 30 was 14.29 percent. The fiscal 2017 return beat the total fund benchmark by 0.63 percentage points. This follows returns of 0.92 percent in fiscal year 2016 and 5.45 percent in fiscal 2015. The system’s active management of the funds, rather than relying on index funds, added approximately $400 million in value after all investment costs. The strong performance was led by a 22.2 percent return on international investments, compared with a benchmark return of 21.6 percent, and a 19.6 percent return on domestic equities, compared with a benchmark return of 18.5 percent.

The $30.7 billion Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System saw its investment portfolio return 11.7 percent for the fiscal year ended June 30, exceeding its policy benchmark return of 11.17 percent. The result was a significant increase from the previous fiscal year’s investment return of 2.15
