Omicron OMG: Hopes and fears as we start a new year

One of the best parts of my job is talking to people in the industry and hearing what they are thinking about. And what they are thinking about right now is the potential upheaval from yet another COVID-19 surge. Two different people, in two separate interviews, quoted the same line from Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) in The Godfather: Part III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”

Because we keep thinking we are out of the pandemic, that we can set it aside and move on to the post-pandemic environment, and then a new variant arises, and sweeps around the globe, and pulls us back into the continuing health crisis. Over the summer, the Delta variant was derailing return-to-work and vacation travel plans. At the end of December, it’s the Omicron variant making waves. (I guess we can thank COVID-19 for getting us all to brush up on the Greek alphabet.)

All of this is to say 2022 is probably going to look a lot like 2021. The themes
