Lille, the fourth largest metropolitan area in France, is located in the north of the country close to the border with Belgium. Although the city of Lille is relatively small, with a population of around 230,000, the wider metropolitan conurbation is home to more than 1.1 million inhabitants. Lille is also the capital of the Nord-Pas de Calais region. Over the years, Lille has evolved to become a centre for innovation, competitiveness and forward thinking. The region has a prominent position on the country’s education map, ranking second, and six distinct clusters have been established with the close collaboration of education, R&D and business organisations. These clusters stretch across a wide range of activities, from biotech and life science research through innovative textile development and all the way to the creation of green technologies. This has prompted the development of many business, technology and science parks.
