You could smell the brain cells burning when members of the Institutional Real Estate, Inc. brain trust gathered for their annual fall meeting in Southern California. Specifically, the 75 members of The Institutional Real Estate Letter – North America’s Editorial Advisory Board came together to discuss the overarching economic and real estate issues of the day.

The three-pronged plan of intellectual attack, directed by Institutional Real Estate, Inc. publisher and CEO Geoffrey Dohrmann, consisted of subject-specific breakout groups, quick-tally votes and freewheeling discourse. Among the topics:

• The trouble with core investing

• The mood for value-added and opportunistic investing

• The euro zone crisis

• Investing south of the border

• The prospects for single-family housin
