Blackstone fund targets $20b in equity

by Loretta Clodfelter

Blackstone is raising the largest real estate private equity fund, ever. Again. Blackstone Real Estate Partners IX is targeting a total equity capital raise of $20 billion.

And the fund has secured a number of recent commitments to take it toward that goal. In November, news broke that the $70 billion Minnesota State Board of Investment has committed $300 million, the $42.4 billion Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund has committed $150 million and the $20.5 billion Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana has committed $50 million to the fund. In addition, the $23.1 billion New Mexico State Investment Council plans to invest an undisclosed amount in the fund.

The opportunistic real estate fund will invest across property types, globally. The previous fund in the series, Blackstone Real Estate Partners VIII, held a $15.8 billion final close in 2015. Blackstone declined to comment on fundraising.
