A Conversation with Bill Estabrook

by Mike Consol

The man at the helm of the Ohio Police & Fire Pension Fund (OP&F) for the past dozen years has been Bill Estabrook. That changes on Dec. 31, when Estabrook retires from the organization and 43 years of service in the public sector. He joined OP&F as executive director in May 2001 and has been responsible for the strategic, financial and operational oversight of the fund, which supplies pension checks and healthcare benefits to almost 55,000 active public safety officers, retirees and survivors. During his tenure, Estabrook has boosted the value of OP&F’s investment portfolio from $8.7 billion to its current value of more than $12 billion. Estabrook recently spoke with Mike Consol, editor of The Institutional Real Estate Letter – North America, about the biggest challenges and successes his organization has experienced, and what pension funds must do to stay on a growth trajectory in a tumultuous investment
