Urban Commons unveils $250m development in California

by Andrea Waitrovich

Urban Commons has unveiled plans for a $250 million mixed-use development surrounding the Queen Mary, a retired cruise ship docked in Long Beach, Calif.

The plans submitted to the city involve turning the area along the Long Beach bay front into Queen Mary Island, which will be all-inclusive entertainment destination built on the 65 acres of waterfront land surrounding the Queen Mary.

The 700,000-square-foot project will include a main lobby plaza; 2,400-foot boardwalk alongside marinas, eclectic retail shops, cafes and bars; 200-room hotel; and outdoor amphitheater. Multiple design elements would honor the luxury liner’s glory years of the 1930s and 1940s, including a main lobby plaza off the freeway.

Urban Commons is collaborating with London-based Urban Legacies to bring Urban Adventure, a 150,000-square-foot multi-activity concept that includes 20 interactive and experiential activities ranging from an indoor ice climbing wall to surfing, canyoning, skydiving, zip lining and a trampoline park.
