Tracking the energy efficiency of a real estate investment portfolio can help owners identify inefficiencies, effectively direct capital expenditures and enjoy financing advantages through ENERGY STAR certification, according to a report by Thomas Stanchak, managing director of sustainability with Stoneweg US, titled, “The power of benchmarking: A smart strategy amid rising capital costs and shifting market dynamics,” which was published in the June issue of Institutional Real Estate Americas.

“Despite the clear financial benefits, relatively few buildings achieve certification due to inconsistent energy data tracking, lack of investment in efficiency measures and misconceptions about the difficulty of implementation,” says Stanchak. “Buildings that do earn certification often benefit from proactive management, targeted efficiency upgrades and a commitment to data-driven decision-making, setting them apart from the competition.”
