Romanian grocery retailer sells for €1.3b

Dutch-Belgian retail group Ahold Delhaize has agreed to acquire 100 percent of Romanian grocery retailer Profi Rom Food SRL from MidEuropa, an independent private equity player in Central and Eastern Europe focused on Central and Eastern Europe with approximately €5.3 billion ($5.6 billion) of assets under management.

The sales price was valued at €1.8 billion ($1.9 billion).

Profi is a traditional grocery retailer in Romania, operating 1,654 stores in the country. In the 12 months ending June 2023, the company generated €2.5 billion ($2.7 billion) in sales.

The acquisition will more than double the size of Ahold Delhaize’s existing Romanian business, which operates under the Mega Image brand and has 969 stores, predominantly in urban areas.
