Proposed mega-mall in Miami wins approval from county commissioners

by Andrea Zander

The Miami-Dade County Commission approved the development of the $4 billion mega-mall American Dream Miami, which promises to be the largest mall in North America.

In a nine to one vote, county commissioners approved changing Miami-Dade's growth plan and zoning designations to allow Canadian developer Triple Five to create an even larger version of its current signature property, the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. American Dream Miami would be about 1.2 million square feet larger than the Mall of America.

Triple Five estimates it would draw some 30 million visitors a year and as many as 70,000 separate vehicle trips every day.

The proposed complex would cover approximately 7.2 million square feet. Triple Five plans to build 3.5 million square feet of retail space, a massive theme park and 2,000 hotel rooms. In addition, American Dream Miami would have a 16-story indoor ski slope, a 20-slide water park, a 14-screen 3-D movie theater, and a performing arts center representing 2.7 million square feet of entertainment and common space.

The project still needs to obtain 32 local, state and federal permits before construction can begin.
