Office conversions lost their momentum in 2022, according to RentCafe.com. This year, 3,390 apartments were converted from former office buildings. This conversion type still makes up the highest share of all adaptive reuse projects, at 34 percent.
Hotel conversions also gained popularity in 2022, making up 29 percent of the total inventory nationwide, with 2,954 apartments.
Los Angeles is the conversion hub, holding 13 percent of the nation’s retrofitted apartments. The 1,292 apartments that brought that new home smell into old, abandoned buildings made 2022 the best year for adaptive reuse in L.A. history.
