Meta shelves data center project in Denmark

by Kali Persall

Meta Platforms Inc., formerly known as Facebook Inc., has stopped construction of two data centers in Denmark, according to Bloomberg.

The technology giant canceled a 2.4 billion kroner ($342 million) contract that was signed in August with Aarsleff Holding.

“Aarsleff has received a termination of the contract entered into on Aug. 3, 2022, with a multinational company for the Civil Works Package in connection with an extension of a data center in Odense,” said the company in a Dec. 13 statement. “The work on the data center was in progress and will be stopped immediately as a consequence of the termination of contract.”

Meta currently operates two large data centers in its Odense campus. The shelved project would have added two additional buildings to house servers. It was scheduled to open by the end of 2025.
