Marriott International acquires New York hotel for $206m

Marriott International has purchased W New York – Union Square, a 270-room hotel in Manhattan’s Union Square neighborhood, for $206 million.

Located at 201 Park Ave. S, the 20-story hotel first served as the headquarters of the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in 1911 and shifted to its current state in 2000.

Marriott is planning a significant renovation in a move to advance the company’s strategy of redefining and reinvigorating the brand in North America. This follows the brand’s recent opening of W Aspen, the brand’s first alpine destination in the United States. It also expects to debut W hotels in Philadelphia and Toronto.

Marriott has already announced $200 million in renovations to properties across the United States and Canada. The renovations to the newest acquisition will include a “socially-charged spa” and an expanded restaurant, among other upgrades, the hotel brand revealed.
