Facebook to build data center in Ohio

by Andrea Waitrovich

Facebook has plans to build its next data center in Ohio. The firm will invest $750 million to build a new facility in New Albany, located near Columbus.

The data center will employ 100 permanent workers when it’s finished in 2019. And it will be entirely powered by renewable energy.

The facility will be built in two phases, each totaling 450,000 square feet, and an administration building. The development will include a 970,000-square-foot server warehouse on the 345-acre site. The first phase is expected to be completed in 2019 and the second in 2020.

Facebook will receive an estimated $37.1 million in state tax incentives to support the project, according to the Ohio Development Services Agency.

Facebook’s existing U.S. data centers are in Oregon, North Carolina and Iowa. Centers in Fort Worth, Texas, and Los Lunas, New Mexico, are currently under construction. In addition, Facebook announced plans for another new site in Papillon, Neb., in April.

In June, the social media giant announced that it hit 2 billion monthly users.
