George Agethen is senior vice president, Asia Pacific, with Ivanhoé Cambridge, which he joined in 2015 and led a transformation of the organization’s presence and strategy in Asia Pacific, establishing the region as a meaningful contributor to the company. Agethen recently spoke with Reno Sio, managing director, Asia Pacific, with Institutional Real Estate, Inc, about Ivanhoé Cambridge’s investment strategy and goals.

When was Ivanhoé Cambridge organized, and what is its mandate?

Ivanhoé Cambridge has a very interesting history. Ivanhoe Corp was founded in 1953 by Sam Steinberg, a Montreal businessman who built the Steinberg’s grocery-store chain. The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), one of Canada’s leading institutional fund managers, acquired Ivanhoe in 1990, when Ivanhoe’s real estate portfolio consisted of 36 shopping centers, located mainly in Quebec and Ontario.
