About 38 percent of Americans reported being self-storage users, according to a report by Storage Café. Downsizing is the main reason Americans rent a storage unit, followed by moving and needing more storage space at home.
Gen Xers (54 percent) and baby boomers (51 percent) are the most likely to be self-storage users. Millennials also are starting to show an increased interest, with 40 percent now identifying themselves as self-storage users.
Idaho claims the most self-storage users (59 percent), followed by Utah (54 percent), with baby boomers making up the main age group of self-storage users in both states. New Mexico follows closely, with 53 percent of residents claiming to be self-storage users, and Gen X New Mexicans leading other generations
