IREI LIVE webinar series is designed to provide you with a snapshot of key trends and investment opportunities to help you evaluate your investment program. During the Future of Logistics & Retail, we will examine how logistics and retail have evolved over the last 20 years to put today’s opportunities and challenges into context. We will discuss what are the key drivers today as well as what are some key aspects and nuances that are misunderstood to provide new insights into known trends today. From there, we will examine how today’s emerging trends will create new opportunity sets in the future. Loretta Clodfelter is senior editor of Institutional Real Estate Americas, the award-winning flagship publication of San Ramon, Calif.–based Institutional Real Estate, Inc. She has edited the publication since 2015. She has more than 15 years of experience covering the commercial and institutional real estate industry, first with REITStreet and Institutional Real Estate Newsline (IREN), and then as production editor of Institutional Real Estate Europe and copyeditor for all of IREI’s products. Loretta has a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Mills College.

Austin Carmichael

Austin Carmichael joined the Oregon State Treasury (OST) as a real estate investment officer in 2014. Carmichael’s primary responsibilities are the oversight and implementation of the real estate portfolio for the Oregon Public Employees’ Retirement Fund (OPERF). OPERF’s approximately $9 billion real estate portfolio consists of both separately managed accounts and commingled vehicles and is diversified across core, value-add and opportunistic risk profiles. Prior to joining OST, Carmichael was a consultant at Pension Consulting Alliance and also previously worked at Partners Group.

Juan R. DeAngulo

Juan DeAngulo is managing partner at Elion and a member of its Senior Management, Asset Management and Investment Committees. Since joining Elion, he has developed the firm into a vertically integrated, institutional-grade real estate investment platform, managing more than $2.9 billion in gross real estate assets. Previously, he was managing director at Transwestern Investment Management. DeAngulo is a member of Harvard University’s Alumni Real Estate Board and on the Board and Loan Committee of Wessex Corporation. He holds a certificate from Harvard University’s School of Design Advanced Management Development Program, and he earned his M.B.A. from Regent University and his B.S. from East Tennessee State University

Melinda McLaughlin
SVP, Global Head of Research

Melinda McLaughlin, senior vice president, global head of research, leads Prologis’s global research team, focusing on tracking, analyzing and forecasting logistics real estate fundamentals and structural industry trends. Additionally, she is responsible for translating these insights into strategic decision-making. Her other areas of specialization include supply chain reconfiguration, location differentiation and econometric modeling. Before joining Prologis in 2015, McLaughlin was a vice president at Rosen Consulting Group, a boutique firm that provides strategic consulting services. McLaughlin holds a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in real estate. She is a member of ULI

Devon W. Olson, MAI, CRE

Utah Retirement Systems

Devon Olson is the director of the Utah Retirement Systems real estate portfolio. He is responsible for overseeing acquisition, asset management, disposition and strategic planning and has been instrumental in establishing new real estate investment criteria, policies and procedures and strategic planning for the portfolio. He has been with the Utah Retirement Systems for 34 years and has more than 44 years’ experience in real estate valuation, management, investment and financing. Olson earned B.S. degrees in finance and management from the University of Utah and an M.B.A. from Westminster College. He holds the MAI and CRE designations and is active in PREA.

Jim Raisides
Managing Partner

Jim Raisides is a managing partner of TA Realty and leads the firm’s portfolio management team. He is responsible for strategic management and oversees the achievement of goals and objectives for the firm’s investment vehicles. Over his nearly 30 years of industry experience, Raisides has served in roles that encompass portfolio management, dispositions, capital raising and asset management. He has been with TA Realty since 1996 and a member of the Investment Committee since 2004. He also serves on the Management Committee and Acquisitions Committee and sits on the Board of Managers. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.A. in economics.

Rebecca Strom
Senior Director of Asset Management, West Region

Rebecca Strom is Hines’s Senior Director, Retail Asset Management, West Region. She has more than 18 years of retail real estate experience in a variety of disciplines. Prior to Hines, Strom was the VP of Asset Management for Macerich, where she oversaw asset management for the company’s western retail portfolio, consisting of some of its highest-performing shopping centers. Additionally, she managed the joint venture relationships within Macerich’s West Region and was responsible for their development underwriting. Strom earned a B.S. in business administration with a concentration in management information systems from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Maria Surina
Senior Investment Director, Real Assets Investment Group

Maria Surina is a senior investment director, based in Boston, and a member of the Real Assets Investment Group. Surina is a real estate specialist and focuses on investment idea generation and due diligence primarily in North American real estate markets and across different structures, such as funds, co-investments and direct investments. In addition, Surina works with U.S. pensions and Middle Eastern families. Prior to joining Cambridge Associates in 2018, Surina had roles with Bain Capital Real Estate, DESCO Group and Altus Group. She has experience in portfolio management, direct real estate investment and asset management in the office sector. 

Kyle Turner
Principal and Director of Investments
Equus Capital Partners, Ltd.    

Kyle Turner is a partner of Equus Capital Partners and currently serves as Senior Vice President, Director of Investments. In his current role, Turner is responsible for acquisition activities, including sourcing, underwriting and closing transactions in the Mid-Atlantic, Southwest and Southeast markets. In addition to investment execution and strategy formation, he is responsible for capital formation efforts for the firm’s commingled fund business, programmatic ventures and co-investments. Turner holds an M.B.A. in finance from Villanova University and a B.B.A. in finance from Franklin and Marshall College.

Nicole Welch
Managing Director
Clarion Partners

Nicole Welch, equity owner and managing director, is an asset management officer at Clarion Partners. Based in Los Angeles, she works with the Industrial Group and is responsible for managing the western region, totaling more than 55 million square feet. Welch was previously with JLL as a broker. She has been working in the real estate industry since 2004 and joined Clarion Partners in 2017. Welch is a member of the NAIOP Inland Empire Chapter and serves on the National NAIOP Membership & Chapter Relations Committee. She received a B.A. in political science from Villanova University and an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University.
