CIO of LAFPP to retire after 40 years

by Kali Persall

The Los Angeles Fire and Police Pensions’ (LAFPP) longstanding CIO Tom Lopez has announced plans to retire after more than 40 years with the pension fund.

Lopez began his career with LAFPP in 1980 and has held the role of CIO since 1993. He has led the investment team in building a strong portfolio and has worked with multiple boards over the years. In addition, he has helped navigate the fund through several market downturns and various financial crises, while maintaining an average pension funding status of more than 90 percent since the late 1990s.

During Lopez’s tenure, the pension fund’s assets under management grew from $400 million in 1980 to $27 billion in 2020.

“The LAFPP commissioners wholeheartedly thank Tom Lopez for his years of service,” said Brian Pendleton, board president. “His steady hand and wise advice are a pillar to the success of this fund.”

LAFPP has enlisted Korn Ferry to help in finding a new CIO to succeed Lopez. A
