USDOT earmarks $10b for U.S. airports

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has earmarked $10 billion for commercial and general aviation airports across the United States that have been affected by the COVID-19 virus.

The funding will be provided via grants through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a $2 trillion stimulus package, which was signed by President Donald Trump on March 27.

“This $10 billion in emergency resources will help fund the continued operations of our nation’s airports during this crisis and save workers’ jobs,” said Elaine Chao, U.S. transportation secretary, in a statement.

According to the USDOT, the funding will support continuing operations and replace lost revenue resulting from the decline in passenger traffic and other airport business due to COVID-19. The funds are available for airport capital expenditures, airport ope
