The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has earmarked $1.187 billion in airport safety and infrastructure grants under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
“This federal investment of over $1 billion represents the department’s continued commitment to the safety and efficiency of our nation’s airports for the traveling public,” said U.S. transportation secretary Elaine Chao.
The funding includes $731 million in Airport Improvement Program grants and an additional $455 million in supplemental discretionary grants, according to the USDOT. The grants will be used to fund a wide variety of projects, such as constructing and repairing taxis and runways, installing aircraft lighting and signage, conducting airport master plan studies, and installing airport perimeter fencing.
