Throckmorton Partners, San Jose State turning 264-unit hotel into student housing

A partnership between Throckmorton Partners and San Jose State University (SJSU) is converting the south tower of the Signia by Hilton San Jose hotel complex into a 700-bed student community, according to various media outlets. Plans call for immediate renovations, with delivery expected by August 2024.

Through the latest state budget, SJSU was granted access to $89 million in debt relief capacity as part of the Higher Education Student Housing program, allowing the university to enter a lease agreement with Throckmorton Partners. The lease includes an option to purchase after two years, pending approval of the CSU Board of Trustees.

The redevelopment, currently known as Spartan Village on the Paseo, will include 11 residential stories, together with ground-floor retail. Of the 264 units, 124 beds will be designated as affordable. Community amenities, located on the second floor, are set to include dining facilities, a communal kitchen, a study lounge and study space,
