Texas wind generation soars to new heights in March

by Kali Persall

Texas grid operator ERCOT’s wind power generation blew past its previous record in March, topping 10.4 million megawatt hours during the month, according to Electrek Green Energy Brief (EGEB).

In comparison, this beat ERCOT’s previous record by 2 million megawatt hours, which was set in December 2020. That output propelled wind’s share of the ERCOT electricity market to 38.6 percent and number one in total generation.

Solar generation also did well in March, topping 1 million megawatt hours — a high it had only reached three times previously in 2020.

Combined, wind and solar accounted for 42.4 percent of ERCOT’s output during the month, beating gas at 30 percent, and coal at 14.9 percent.
