Sovereign wealth funds invest $80b in venture capital

Sovereign wealth funds invested a record amount in venture capital last year, according to the "Sovereign Wealth Funds 2018" report prepared by IE University and ICEX-Invest. In 2018, the sovereign funds carried out investments valued at $80 billion.

The United States, which has dominated startups in recent years, accounted for 60 percent of deals in the past two years.

According to this report, the sector with the highest number of operations registered during 2018 is the technology sector. Sovereign wealth funds participated in 77 rounds of technology-focused financing, investing mostly in the United States and China, but also in India, the United Kingdom and Singapore.

By sectors, biotech, fintech, mobility, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and cloud computing were the ones that attracted the most sovereign investment.
