Renewables become Germany’s top energy source, topping coal for first time

by Andrea Zander

Renewable energy was Germany’s main power source for the first time in 2018, with renewables providing more than 40 percent of the year’s produced electricity, overtaking coal’s 39 percent, according to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems.

Wind power generation was the second-largest electricity source in Germany in 2018 and accounted for more than a fifth of total generation, or 24.1 percent.

Germany aims for renewables to provide 65 percent of its energy by 2030 and will end nuclear power by 2022. A German commission has been set up to produce a phase-out plan for the world’s biggest power plant fuel.
