U.S. REITs fell 0.79 percent in September, according to the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index, underperforming the broader equity markets. The S&P 500 Index rose 1.93 percent in the month. Year-to-date, the sector has advanced 6.04 percent, compared with 12.53 percent for the S&P 500 Index.
The worst-performing property sector in September was infrastructure, which fell 7.22 percent. Investors may have been taking some gains off the table, as the segment was the best-performing in August. Year-to-date, infrastructure REITs have risen 24.39 percent, behind only data center REITs, which are up 27.95 percent through the end of September.
