Macquarie Capital Principal Finance has bought into its first biogas project in the United Kingdom, according to several media sources.
The company purchased a majority stake in BioCow, which generates clean energy through the process of anaerobic digestion, whereby microorganisms break down agricultural waste in the absence of oxygen. BioCow uses the biomethane produced to heat homes and businesses, as well as green transport fuel.
A purchase price was not disclosed.
According to a statement by Macquarie, BioCow will use the investment to expand its existing operations in Cambridgeshire and support the completion of the United Kingdom’s first biomethane injection point into the national transmission grid. This gas connection is a part of a pilot project with National Grid that aims to develop innovative solutions to reduce the time and cost of connecting to the high-pressure national transmission grid.
