Google to invest $13b in expansion plans

by Andrea Zander

Google has plans to invest $13 billion across U.S. data centers and offices in 2019.

The expansion will create more than 10,000 new construction jobs in Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Virginia, expanding Google’s presence to 24 states, including data centers in 13 communities.

Google will double its workforce in Virginia and Georgia; develop new data centers in Ohio, Nebraska, and Nevada; expand data centers in Oklahoma and South Carolina; and develop a new office and data center in Texas.

At the end of 2018, Google reported cash and short-term investments of $109.14 billion, according to FactSet data. And in 2018, the company invested $9 billion in facility expansions.

In December, Google announced a $1 billion NYC campus in Hudson Square, which is slated to open 2020.

The expansion plan comes weeks after Apple’s announced plan to invest in more states and expand its operations. Finisar, a manufacturer of optical communications components, was awarded $390 million from Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund. Finisar is just one example of Apple’s expanding investment in U.S. job growth and manufacturing. The award will enable Finisar to exponentially increase its R&D spending and high-volume production of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). VCSELs power some of Apple’s most popular new features, including Face ID, Animoji and Portrait mode selfies made possible with the iPhone X TrueDepth camera, as well as the proximity-sensing capabilities of AirPods.

The Apple fund has plans to invest $1 billion into U.S. companies. It is designed to foster innovative production and high-skill jobs that will help lay the foundation for a new era of technology-driven manufacturing in the United States. In May 2018, Apple announced Corning Incorporated had been awarded the first award from the fund, $200 million to support their R&D, capital equipment needs and state-of-the-art glass processing.

In 2018, Apple spent $60 billion with 9,000 American component suppliers and companies, an increase of more than 10 percent from the year before, supporting more than 450,000 jobs.
