GM and LG Energy Solution JV invests $275m to expand battery-cell manufacturing plant in Tennessee

Ultium Cells, a joint venture of LG Energy Solution and General Motors, will expand its Spring Hill, Tenn., battery-cell manufacturing operations to increase its capacity from 35 gigawatt-hours to 50 gigawatt-hours.

The 2.8-million-square-foot facility will supply battery cells to General Motors’ Spring Hill assembly plant, located next door, for production of the Cadillac LYRIQ, the first electric vehicle produced at the plant, and other GM Ultium Platform–based electric vehicles. According to Ultium Cells, progress is well under way on the state-of-the-art Spring Hill plant, which will use the most advanced and efficient battery-cell manufacturing processes. The plant will be extremely flexible and able to adapt to ongoing advances in technology and materials.
