GM, Bechtel plan thousands of fast charging EV stations across U.S.

by Andrea Zander

General Motors Co. has plans to set up thousands of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the United States in collaboration with Bechtel Corp.

“The way we think about it, we want to put chargers where they’re going to have the greatest influence on EV adoption, wherever that may be,” stated Mike Ableson, General Motors’ vice president of EV infrastructure and charging, to CNN. “I believe a lot of those are actually going to be in urban areas.”

As part of the partnership, General Motors will offer data and expertise related to where the chargers will be located and Bechtel will provide engineering, building and permitting solutions and expertise.

And it is seeking investors to fund the collaboration. The partnership was at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) stage and the business structure for the tie-up had not yet been finalized, reported Reuters.

GM and Bechtel are planning to form a separate company to develop the charging network, and will seek investment from other entities.

The initiative is in line with GM’s plan of launching 20 new EV models by 2023.
