Feds announce more than $244m available for U.S. railroad projects

by Andrea Zander

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) recently announced it has more than $244 million in grant funding available through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program.

Funding is for projects that increase rail reliability, efficiency or transportation safety. Eligible passenger and freight projects include those that improve intercity passenger rail capital assets, relocate rail lines, upgrade highway-rail grade crossings, deploy railroad safety technology, upgrade short-line railroad infrastructure, and address congestion challenges.

At least a quarter of funds have been reserved for projects in rural communities. Applications are due in 60 days.

FRA will offer eligible applicants web-based training and technical assistance Sept. 4.
