CRRC, a Chinese state-owned rolling stock manufacturer, has partnered with Portuguese construction company Mota-Engil to build out a subway system in Monterrey, Mexico.

According to InfraPPP, the partners signed a €1.3 billion ($1.27 billion) contract for the development of three metro lines and 19 stations for the existing Monterrey subway system.

With a total length of 36 kilometers (22 miles), the lines will connect the city center with Santa Catarina in the north and Mederos in the south. The system will have the capacity to carry about 500,000 passengers daily.

The Monterrey Metro rapid transit system was initially developed by a consortium led by Siemens and Line 1 began operation in 1991, according to UrbanRail. Line 2 opened in 1994 and construction on a northern extension began in August 2005. Line 3 opened in 2021.
