$1b New York state pipeline project scrapped

Oklahoma-based energy company The Williams Co. is backing off plans to build a $1 billion pipeline that would serve National Grid for customers in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island, N.Y.

The pipeline plans were denied twice by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, most recently based on the company’s inability to demonstrate compliance with water quality standards, according to SmarterAnalyst.

The pipeline would have involved the installation of 17.4 miles of 26-inch diameter natural gas loop pipeline within New York State waters that had a capacity of 400,000 dekatherms per day of natural gas.

“The decision to pause this important infrastructure project is unfortunate for the region as the design and construction would have generated valuable economic activity in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and would have directly and indirectly supported more than 3,000 jobs during the construction period,’’ said Laura Creekmur
