by Andrea Zander

Walmart reported its best U.S. comp sales growth in nine years on a two-year stack of 6.8 percent growth. U.S. comp sales rose 4.2 percent in the fourth quarter 2018 from the year-ago period's 2.6 percent rise.

Total revenue was $138.8 billion, an increase of $2.5 billion, or 1.9 percent, total revenue was $140.5 billion, an increase of $4.2 billion, or 3.1 percent.

Many analysts are encouraged by Walmart's online growth, which signals it may have enough competitive strength to compete against Amazon. Walmart U.S. e-Commerce continued to benefit from the expansion of grocery pickup and delivery and a broader assortment on Walmart.com. Walmart e-commerce sales in the quarter grew 43 percent, just ahead of the 40 percent year-over-year growth.

Sam’s Club comp sales increased 3.3 percent, and eCommerce sales grew 21 percent.

Walmart has plans to add 1,000 grocery pickup locations, and reached nearly 800 grocery delivery locations.
