Undersea data center to come online in China’s Port of Hainan

by Kali Persall

The Port of Hainan in China is planning to launch a commercial undersea data center, which will operate on the sea bed near the Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant, according to Data Center Dynamics.

The project will install racks of data center equipment in 100 airtight pressure vessels and be built in three phases. Five data cabins will be installed this year, 45 data cabins undergoing their second phase from 2022 to 2023, and an additional 50 installed the third phase from 2024 to 2025.

The tiny data centers will be operated through a combined power-and-internet cable and cooled by the surrounding seawater. The project will use low-carbon energy from the local Changjiang nuclear power station, possibly making it a carbon-neutral data center.
