CME Group launches micro contracts for corn and soybeans

by Elise Mackanych

CME Group has launched an opportunity to trade corn and soybeans among retail investors, according to Bloomberg. With record futures and options volume in agriculture, CME is offering five “micro” contracts for agricultural commodities, trading at one-tenth the size of its standard offerings. These contracts are cash-settled, instead of physically delivered.

These micro contracts are ideal for smaller-scale farmers or dairy farmers. More than 54,000 contracts had been traded by the morning of Feb. 24, according to CME. With traders on edge regarding the uncertainty of the tariff threats, this opportunity allows investors to get exposure to more products, at less risk.

“We’re seeing lots of geopolitical uncertainty that’s created a lot of risk for our customers, and so that was an opportunity for us to serve them,” said Derek Sammann, global head of commodities and options products at CME, in a statement.
